Back To Basics

As part of my desire to get a legitimate art career jump started, I've gone back to the drawing basics.  Drawing is one of my weakest areas, so I'm trying to work on it.  This is something I started a while back but never finished, all I previously had done was the girl on the left.  I just finished the sketching today and I'll continue to work on it along with everything else.  It's not exactly the usual type of material I release here, but there's no where else I'd rather release it.  Plus I haven't given you guys much in a while, so...

  1. Nice. It's a little rough here and there but it's a sketch, so that's fine. I feel like the mermaid needs work. It's lacking the level of detail that everyone else has. Her hair is kind of a blob and her tail fin needs distinction from the rest of the tail. Also, there's something not quite right with her face, not sure what it is. I like it, though. It's cool that you're branching out and trying different things.

    1. You're absolutely spot on with all those critiques. I can't figure out what's wrong with her face either, guess I'll just have to play around with it more.

    2. Well, when it comes to her face;

      her eyes are too wide apart, It doesn't show very well in this viewpoint, but if you imagine her face foreward. Her lips are also abit thick and too wide and her hair is disproportionate from her head, which makes it look like the top of her head is significantly larger than the rest of her head. Her cheekbones also seem sunken, or not there at all making her head look shapeless as opposed to the other characters.

      But indeed, the rest is well made and as I would write in any critique; still much better than what I could do.

    3. Ah! And I would say the nose is somewhat sunken aswell, looks like the lips reach further than the tip of her nose.

    4. I think it might be a lack of distinguishing features. It's almost as though someone painted a simple face onto a mannequin.

      On an unrelated note, I find it interesting that you left hook's hook as an outline. Were you planning to use that as a point of reference? Maybe have Wendy's clothes snagged on it or some such?

      I also just realized that the girl kissing hook's first mate down there is, in fact, also a mermaid. I didn't notice her tail initially and the distinct hairdo and full lips lead me to think she was a life-sized Tinkerbell.

    5. I left the hook outlined to help convey what's going on down there. He's supposed to be rubbing Wendy's naughty bits with the side of the hook while the sharp point is safely curved around the back of her leg. I was gonna paint over it in the finished project.

      I can see why you thought she was tinkerbell, but I went back to the movie and there is in fact a red headed mermaid with that hairstyle.

    6. I don't doubt it. I just thought that was kinda funny and figured I'd share the moment, haha. I never realized one of the mermaids had that hairstyle. I'll probably never miss it, now. I'll say, "Look! It's redheaded mermaid Tinkerbell." And others will reply, "Huh, I never noticed that." Then I'll say, "You would have if you were checking DoodleNooch's incest hentai blog." And they'll be like, "...wat?" And I'll reply,

      "Okay, now, now what had happened was, uh, there was a balloon a-and some gas and it, uh, made like a bright light and Venus, uh, a-a-and that's why you didn't know the mermaid had Tinkerbell hair."

    7. I've wondered for a long time now, why do I keep coming back here? I know there won't be any updates, but I check anyway and I'm always sad when I do. I realized today that I don't even care if Date Night is ever finished. I know we didn't know eachother very well, but I miss you all the same. I feel like I lost a friend. Hope you're well, Dood.

  2. A program that can really help you out with drawing basics is Manga Studio. It has tons of tools that can assist with perspective, poses, sharpening up line art, etc. It was like night and day with my pics http://emperorkarsa.blogspot.com/
